Bill would open Medicare critical access status to rural military and tribal hospitals

What does this do?

HR 8986 would allow states to bypass standard requirements for critical access hospital designation for certain rural hospitals beginning in October 2026. To qualify, a hospital must meet at least three conditions from a defined list, which includes serving TRICARE-covered military families or rural veterans, earning at least 8 percent of total revenue from TRICARE patients, earning at least 15 percent of maternity care revenue from TRICARE patients, or being located on a Native American reservation. Hospitals that already hold sole community hospital status would not be eligible.
