Federal earthquake warning program renewed with $83M yearly budget through 2030

What does this do?

HR 3168 renews the National Earthquake Hazards Reduction Program, which has operated since 1977, and keeps it funded through 2030. The bill expands earthquake early warnings to more high-risk areas, adds tsunami hazard mapping, requires aftershock forecasts after major earthquakes, and updates safety standards for buildings and critical infrastructure. It also requires earthquake alerts to be sent quickly and in the main languages spoken in affected areas, through closer coordination between the U.S. Geological Survey and the FCC.

Who does it affect?

People living in earthquake-prone regions, particularly in the western United States and Alaska, are most directly affected, along with building designers, construction contractors, and local emergency managers. Tribal governments are added as official partners in planning and decision-making alongside state and local governments.

Expanding the seismic sensor network and early warning system means more communities would receive alerts before shaking arrives, and updated building and infrastructure standards would apply to a broader range of jurisdictions.
