Online sellers would have to show product origin and business country on listings

What does this do?

S 294 would require online sellers to clearly display on each product listing the country where the product was made and the country where the seller's business is based. If a product was made in multiple countries, all of them must be listed. The rule would take effect one year after relevant government agencies finalize their coordination agreement.

Who does it affect?

The bill primarily affects online marketplaces, including large platforms that host third-party sellers, and the businesses selling new foreign-made goods on them. Shoppers who buy products online are also affected, as they would see origin information before purchasing.

Why does it matter?

Retailers who were honestly misled by a supplier about product origin are shielded from penalties, provided they correct the listing quickly after learning the truth. Small sellers earning under $20,000 a year with fewer than 200 sales are exempt, as are listings for food, FDA-regulated drugs, used goods, and certain agricultural products already covered by other labeling rules.
