VA ordered to test over-the-counter hearing aids against prescription devices for veterans

What does this do?

S 3739 requires the Department of Veterans Affairs to run a two-year pilot program testing over-the-counter hearing aids against the prescription hearing aids the VA currently provides. The program must launch within one year of enactment, operate at a minimum of two VA medical facilities in different regions, and divide participants roughly evenly between the two device types. A separate provision directs the Government Accountability Office to study how well the VA currently serves veterans with mild-to-moderate hearing loss and report findings within 18 months.

Who does it affect?

The program is open to VA-enrolled veterans who have audiologist-confirmed mild-to-moderate hearing loss, no medical red flags against OTC devices, and access to a smartphone or internet for app-based features. VA audiologists and medical staff at participating facilities are also directly affected.
